About the Program
Originating as a pilot project in Georgia around 2017, the census was created in response to a desire for gardeners to learn more about the pollinators they were seeing. Fast forward several years, Mississippi is now the sixth state to be included in the Great Southeast Pollinator Census, joining alongside Georgia, Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
The three main goals of the project are:
- to create sustainable pollinator habitat
- to increase the entomological literacy of our citizens
- to generate useful data about our pollinator populations.
The census takes place on a Friday and Saturday in August, allowing both schools and weekend groups to participate. The final data is available to everyone, and may be especially useful for educators, researchers, community leaders, or for homeowners just looking to add plants in hopes of supporting our native pollinators.
