Community Resilience in South Mobile County

About the Project
South Mobile County, like many frontline communities, faces significant vulnerability to flooding. The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina still affects residents, who are grappling with the long-term consequences of the damage. Rainfall and coastal hazards, such as storm surge and sea-level rise, each represent individual flooding hazards to the county. However, these hazards can also interact to create compound flood risk which will act to exacerbate regular flooding events. In addition, flood risk is expected to worsen in the future as the county receives more frequently intense rainfall events and sea-level rise reduces stormwater drainage capacity.
To tackle both current and future flood challenges, we have taken lessons learned from our Resilience East Biloxi effort to tailor our engagement strategies, recognizing the unique needs and capacities of South Mobile County. In collaboration with the Gulf States Policy Center, Boat People SOS, Forward Church, and Mobile County, we hosted community dialogues to help raise awareness of current and future flood risk and identify strategies for reducing flood impacts. These dialogues not only enhanced our engagement approach but also laid the groundwork for future interactions with similar communities across the county.
