Nature-Based Solutions to Regional Stormwater Management

About the Project
Ocean Springs, MS, like many other cities, faces a significant demand for affordable housing suitable for working-class and lower middle-class families. As the need for housing in Ocean Springs and Jackson County grows, so does the urgency for improved stormwater management systems. The available uplands for development are typically flat with inadequate drainage, which heightens the risk of flooding for both current and prospective homeowners. By rethinking and redesigning stormwater management strategies, we aim to proactively address potential flooding challenges associated with future development.
The Goal of This Project
Our goal is to work with and enhance natural systems to create a regional stormwater management framework in Ocean Springs that can effectively tackle the anticipated challenges of flooding and development while also expanding green space access for residents. In the initial phase of this project, we assessed the potential of nature-based solutions to mitigate flooding through effective stormwater management and the improvement of both current and new systems. This assessment involved collecting input from municipal and community stakeholders, as well as conducting biological and physical field evaluations. Moving forward, we aim to secure funding for engineering and design, implement nature-based solutions in three specific areas within Ocean Springs and unincorporated Jackson County, gather additional feedback on flooding challenges and access to green spaces, and promote community education and awareness regarding nature-based flood mitigation strategies.
