Saltwater Intrusion Working Group

About the Project
Saltwater intrusion is becoming a growing issue in the northern Gulf Coast. Historically, such intrusion events were sporadic and linked to storms, but the current challenge is more persistent, largely driven by rising sea levels. This working group has gathered individuals from diverse backgrounds and expertise to assess their current understanding and inquiries regarding saltwater intrusion. By doing so, we can pinpoint knowledge gaps and stakeholder requirements, ultimately enhancing resource planning and stormwater management strategies.
What We’ve Accomplished So far
Since it’s formation, the Saltwater Intrusion Working Group has served as a collaborative space for researchers, practitioners, agencies and community leaders to better understand and respond to saltwater intrusion across the Gulf Coast. In response to growing concerns from coastal communities and decision-makers, the Working Group has focused on synthesizing existing knowledge, identifying gaps, and improving access to actionable information.
Key Accomplishments to date include:
- Development of a comprehensive white paper synthesizing saltwater intrusion and coastal salinization efforts across the United states, highlighting trends, data gaps, and management approaches (currently under editorial review)
- Compilation and curation of saltwater intrusion-related datasets, helping to improve visibility and accessibility of existing monitoring and modeling efforts
- Ongoing collaboration across disciplines and sectors, strengthening connections among academics, natural resource managers, Extension and Sea Grant professionals, and community partners
This foundational work has positioned the Working Group to move from synthesis and coordination toward deeper, place-based engagement and action.
