How does the disCARD work?
- Discard – Recreational anglers fishing offshore receive a disCARD before their fishing trip and record any finish they release during their fishing trip.
- Photo – After their trip, anglers take a picture of the back of the completed card.
- Text – Anglers text the photo to the number on the card so the information can aid fisheries scientists and management agencies in improving recreational discard data.
Traditional catch cards are often returned by mail, which can delay access to fisheries data.
disCARD combines a physical catch card with electronic submission by text message, allowing information to reach state agencies faster and supporting more timely management decisions and stock assessments.
