Red drum population Dynamics

Red drum have been assessed as a data-poor species; despite existing fishery-independent data from state surveys, little was known about the population dynamics of the adult spawning stock in the north-central Gulf of Mexico.

Specifically, more information was needed regarding red drum age composition and abundance.

project Goals

We aimed to provide updated growth parameters, mortality estimates, indices of relative abundance, and predictions of habitat suitability for adult red drum in the north-central Gulf of Mexico.

About the Marine Fisheries Ecology Program

We are focused on providing science-based solutions to common issues affecting commercial and recreational fishermen in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Our research objectives are to better understand the abundance and distribution, life history (age and growth, maturity), movements and migrations, and feeding ecology of a wide range of important species, including coastal sharks, reef fishes, and coastal pelagics.
