COVID-19 Pandemic Recovery for Mississippi and Alabama’s Fishing Industries

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted both the commercial and charter-for-hire fishing industries in coastal Mississippi and Alabama.

For commercial fishermen, the long-term closure of restaurants has resulted in drastically reduced marketing avenues. Meanwhile, shelter in-place and safer-at-home policies have caused charter-for-hire fishermen to lose most of their customer base.

We aimed to promote local wild-caught seafood and local charter fishing opportunities via new outreach products.

About the Marine Fisheries Ecology Program

We are focused on providing science-based solutions to common issues affecting commercial and recreational fishermen in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Our research objectives are to better understand the abundance and distribution, life history (age and growth, maturity), movements and migrations, and feeding ecology of a wide range of important species, including coastal sharks, reef fishes, and coastal pelagics.
