sHARK dETERRENT tESTING

Human-wildlife conflict in marine systems is intensifying as a result of habitat change and shifts in wildlife abundance and distribution. In U.S. waters, the most critical conflict involving sharks is depredation, the partial or complete removal of hooked fishes by sharks.
Using a combination of controlled experimentation and industry testing, this project aims to test novel shark deterrents to minimize human-shark interactions in recreational reef fish fisheries.
project Goals
By working directly with fishermen and charter captains, we aim to test the efficacy and feasibility of using electronic shark deterrents in the Gulf reef fish fishery.
