Shark Monitoring Program

Fishery-independent surveys, like our long-term bottom longline survey, are fundamental for providing indices of relative abundance, which are then used to establish population trajectories used in stock assessments.
Through our shark monitoring program, we are able to better understand the abundance and distribution, life history (e.g., age and growth, maturity, and mortality), movement, and trophic ecology of a wide range of important elasmobranch species inhabiting the northern Gulf of Mexico.
project Goals
We aim to understand factors influencing elasmobranch distribution and abundance throughout the northern Gulf of Mexico, which are crucial for implementing effective fisheries management and conservation practices.
